Only Peter Obi Conducted Local Government Election In Anambra – Ezeudu

Lawrence Chukwuweike Ezeudu the lawmaker representing Dunukofia state constituency and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Dunukofia, Njikoka, and Anaocha federal constituency election in 2023, has stated that it is only ex-governor Peter Obi who conducted local government elections during his tenure.

Ezeudu who expressed great concern over the bastardization of local government administration in Anambra state since the exit of the Peter Obi regime maintained that the local government system in Anambra has become moribund, especially the replacement of elected officials with a contraption called transition committees whom he said were mere errand men and women of the executive arm.

Ezeudu who spoke with select journalists at the state assembly complex Awka yesterday said it was time the incumbent governor Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo constituted the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) to ignite hope and expectations of the people towards the conduct of local council elections.

He said, ” The governor should constitute a functional ANSIEC then the head of the service in the local government should continue. That is the kind of seriousness the governor will exhibit and we will now know that he wants to conduct a local government election.

Why are we scared of allowing heads of service? Peter Obi used heads of service for years before conducting the local government election and he is now being celebrated. Why are we worried? These heads of service are professional civil servants. If there are funds TC chairmen could not touch, then those funds should be boxed into the account of the local governments.

The other time the governor was talking about Community-Choose-Your-Project Scheme; these things should be within the jurisdiction of local government authorities. I have reasons to doubt if local government elections will be done by this government because you have to first and foremost see it in the budget.

The days of transition committees are far gone. It should not come again. Soludo’s predecessor had these promises of local government election up until 6 years and it was not done. The last local government election in Anambra state was done by Mr. Peter Obi and 2 years later transition committees crept in.

Anambra is a pluralistic state and why must only one political party continue to choose transition committee members? I am of the opinion that for you to be accountable, you should be elected into office. If the governor appoints then those he appointed will account to him and not to the people.

The local government fund is not the state fund. That is the fund that is supposed to transform the grassroots sector. Even refuse collection is the core function of the local government according to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Why do you think there has not been employed in the local government? Does it mean that people don’t retire or does it mean that people don’t answer the call of nature by passing away? When was the last time employment was done in the local government? Local governments have specific functions and I am insisting that the rule of law must reign supreme. “
