A large number of armed arsonists in Abia State have attacked and burnt down the home of the chairman of Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Osisioma Police Division, Chief Amanna Nwaogu.

The PCRC chief was at home when the assailants, said to be in their 20s and 30s, came but managed to escape, a source said, adding that he was the target.

It was learnt that when the gunmen failed to capture him, they thought he was hiding somewhere in the house, so they set the building on fire intent on burning him alongside his property.

The arsonists also prevented Nwaogu’s family members from going into the house to salvage any of their belongings from the house.

Nwaogu’s Sport Utility Vehicle parked in the compound was also burnt.

No member of the family was physically hurt.

Nwaogu, who is the coordinator of the vigilantes in Osisioma council, told The Nation on the telephone that the attackers entered the house last week through the back after breaking down the iron door with an axe.

“Four of them pointed their guns at my children and wife to stop them from making any attempt to come and rescue me. They stayed back to ensure that nothing including me was saved from the property. In my next world, I will not accept working with the police,” he said.
