Full List: Catholic Priests Killed By Unknown Gunmen In 2022


The Catholic Church has borne the brunt of the senseless violence wrecking various regions in Nigeria.

This has led Nigeria’s Catholic priests to live in fear for their lives due to the increasing slew of kidnappings and attacks against the body of Christ.

Over the past months, there have been a series of attacks on Reverend fathers, although some came out unscathed while others have lost their lives in the process.

Below is a list of Catholic Priests killed by gunmen so far this year.

Joseph Aketeh Bako

Father Joseph Aketeh Bako, a Nigerian priest who was kidnapped In March, died while in captivity after armed terrorists attacked the parish rectory in Kudenda, a village outside Kaduna.

Archdiocesan chancellor, Father Christian Okewu Emmanuel, in a statement published May 12, said Father Joseph Aketeh Bako died “at the hands of his captors between April 18 and 20, 2022.”

He added that Father Bako had been ill for some time, and his condition worsened, resulting in his death after witnessing his brother, who had come to visit him on the night of the attack, been killed in cold blood.

Christopher Idia

Reverend Father Christopher Idia, a Catholic priest, was killed by his abductors after being kidnapped in his rectory at Ikabigbo Community of Etsako West, Edo State while coming out for the Sunday mass.

Reverend Father Odia, according to a statement issued by the Catholic Diocese of Auchi,  Etsako West Local Government Area Estate, was killed by his abductors, who whisked him away from his rectory at Ikabigbo, Uzairue, at about 6:30 am.

Rev. Fr. Vitus Borogo

Unknown gunmen suspected to be bandits murdered a Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Vitus Borogo, at Prison Farm, Kujama, along Kaduna-Kachia Road, after a raid on the farm.

According to reports, the incident happened on Saturday at the Prison Farm, Kujama, along Kaduna-Kachia Road.

This was made known on Saturday night via a statement issued by Rev Fr Christian Emmanuel of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria.
